Amazon.com Product Description Ruggedized to military standards, the super-tough Casio G'zOne Type S clamshell phone is able to withstand the penetrating elements of rain, humidity and even submersion in water. It's also shock resistant and its dust-resistant keyboard will stay fully operational even in swirling sandstorms (see more about testing standards below). This dual-band phone runs on Verizon's 800/1900 MHz CDMA network, which offers access to Verizon's Get It Now virtual store (for downloads of games, ringtones, wallpapers and more) and VZ Navigator for audible maps, turn-by-turn directions and location information. Other features include a VGA camera with flash, video capture capability, Bluetoooth connectivity for communication headsets and data transfer, speakerphone, and voice activated dialing.
The front of the Casio G'zOne Type S includes a monochrome LCD that displays incoming calls and a VGA camera with flash (which doubles as a powerful flashlight) . |
Lock down the phone before entering watery conditions for extra security. | Built tough, the G'zOne Type S has a clamshell design that's set within a protective bed of silicon rubber and surrounded on the outside by a sturdy frame of reinforced plastic coated with polyurethane. The G'zOne Type S is also one of the first cell phones to be able to withstand blowing rain, high humidity, and immersion underwater for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter (with ports closed) thanks to the handset's construction with unique screws, water-resistant filters and O-ring combinations. Underneath the clamshell, the G'zOne Type S has a 1.8-inch color TFT screen (176 x 220-pixel resolution) with support for 65K colors. The outside features a supplementary monochrome LCD screen that can display incoming call information, battery life, signal strength, current date and time, stopwatch functions, and more. The protected camera lens and LED flash (which also doubles as a flashlight) reside on the front cover, just above the external display, while up/down volume controls and a camera control button are on the right side of the phone. On the back, the battery cover has a locking mechanism that can be secured before taking the phone into watery conditions. The built in memory provides room for up to 500 contact entries in the phone's address book. A voice dialing feature makes calling friends and associates as easy as saying their names, while the built-in speakerphone allows you to talk handsfree. The phone also comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones and a vibrating alert, and more ringtones can be downloaded via Verizon's Get It Now service. Ringtones can be assigned to specific callers so you don't have to look at the phone to know who's calling, or you can match pictures with callers to identify them. It also ships with a number of handy tools including a calendar, notepad, alarm clock, world clock, calculator, countdown timer, and stopwatch. For snapping photos on the go, the G'zOne Type S is equipped with a VGA camera that includes a 2x digital zoom and integrated flash. You can shoot images in one of three resolutions (640 x 480, 320 x 240, and 120 x 160 pixels), and the camera lets you control settings for brightness, white balance, and three color effects. It provides a self-timer of up to 10 seconds for self-portraits, and you can turn the shutter sound on or off. Additionally, you can capture video clips in QCIF resolution (176 x 144 pixels) up to 15 seconds in length, and you can use the flash as a recording light.
In addition to its rugged features, you also get Bluetooth connectivity, a full range of messaging features, and access to Verizon's Mobile Web 2.0. | This phone provides Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and includes profiles for communication headset, and handsfree car kits. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. Additionally, you can connect your laptop and enjoy dial-up networking (DUN)--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server--using using the G'zOne Type S as your modem. For messaging, the G'zOne Type S provides support for text messaging (SMS), enhanced messaging service (EMS) for sending audio files, multimedia messaging (MMS) for sending pictures and video, and IM chatting. The phone is also Mobile Web 2.0 capable, which offers customizable, enhanced wireless access to the latest in news, sports, weather and more (subscription charges apply). The G'zOne Type S comes standard with a location-enabled e911 feature for emergency situations. Activate Verizon's monthly VZ Navigator service and you'll have all the benefits of advanced GPS technology at your fingertips: heads-up alerts, voice-prompted rutn-by-turn directions, local search of nearly 14 million points of interest in the US, and detailed color maps. Ordered 5 weeks ago - expected in another month July 15, 2008 Conspicuous Consumer (Waynesboro, GA United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Just thought you might want to know that this phone is seriously backordered although the website gives you no clue it is not currently available. I ordered it on June 11 and received notice to expect it on August 22. But this is the phone I want so I'm sitting tight.
Worth owning, with drawbacks January 29, 2008 Nicolas S. Martin (Indianapolis, IN United States) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
After a couple of months of usage I think this phone was a good purchase, but I have some complaints. The manufacturer does a fine job of touting the plusses, so I'll address the minuses. My most recent phone for comparison is the LG VX8100.
1) The ringer is muffled when the phone is in a pocket, so calls are easily missed. The selection of ring tones is poor from the standpoint of audibility. (Poor from any standpoint, actually.)
2) The screen is horrible in daylight. the 8100 was far better.
3) The speaker phone button is unwisely placed -- twice! -- so that it is easy to inadvertently activate it.
4) The volume control is screwy, sometimes indicating that I'm trying to adjust the headset volume when no headset is attached. When I did attach a headset, the volume was dismally low.
I admit that I'm a harsh judge of cell phones, which aren't first generation, after all. Overall I find the phone reasonably pleasant to use, but the poor screen and the hard-to-hear rings are unacceptable. By comparison, the 8100 had an easily heard ringer and a lovely screen, and if I could combine the best of the two phones I'd give five stars. (Sadly, there seems to be no chance that cell phone makers will combine all the best features in one phone, so my stars won't be spent.)
I've had very good experience with Verizon's GPS on this phone (except in the nightmare which are the roads of San Antonio). I have even found Verizon's customer service to be decent.
Of the three colors, only the black has the rubberized surface, which I prefer. I don't know if Amazon offers it, and most Verizon stores must special order it. (The black seems to be pictured on Amazon's product page, but I would call them to find out what they actually ship.)
You might think that the phone is masculine, but when I gave my wife a blue one she thought it was attractive, though it is not dainty. She might have thought differently if I had told her it was "ruggedized," so I didn't.
Real good phone January 20, 2008 M. Lipke (Minneapolis, MN) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have broken more of the external screens than I can remember. This phone has a thick bezel on the outside screen which should enable me to put this problem behind me. I am a heavy cell phone user that does not use the camera or downloaded rings, etc. I try to be careful, but at 2500 minutes/month, my phones take a beating in airports etc. This phone works great. The ruggedization will come in handy. The charge cable is a little fussy, like the LG phones, but it comes with a cradle that allows me to just set the phone in the cradle when I get home, without plugging in the cable. It is charged when I leave in the morning. Battery life is very good. Speaker phone is better than some, not as good as others, but adequate. Overall, I like the phone. It is tough like a hammer. I like hammers. Ring tones? Get a fooh fooh fone. Camera? get a camera. This is a phone, not a mp3 player.
BASIC OLD SCHOOL PHONE ... December 17, 2007 Cary Chan (Brooklyn, NY USA) 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
If you are not into touch screens, pda styles phones, then this is the phone for you. Its not perfect but its as basic and durable as you can get.
pros: 1) Durable, its can be dropped (even in water),chewed on (by a baby)thrown around and you dont have to worry. Its like a timex, it takes a licking and keeps on ticking/making/recieving calls. 2)Built in fashlight. No more worries about getting batteries for your flashlight, just use this. It may not be good for long range, but if you're looking for something in your closet, need to look for something under your bed or need to do some minor plumbing under the sink, this will do. 3)lcd clock. Unlike many phones today. you dont need to open the phone to see the time, its always on, unless you are in teh dark then you will have to open the phone for backlight. 4)Speaker phone, although its not that loud it works fine in a quiet room. 5)Built in flash for taking pictures. Yes, this is also a camera/video phone.
Cons 1) Weird that this phone was military test, but sometimes the battery pops out when you drop it. I read reviews that this happens alot, so just be careful. 2) Earpiece and speaker phone volumes are low. Maybe because the phone is water resistance so they had to protect these parts. Blue tooth works much better. 3) Why is the speaker on the speakerphone on the other side of phone. You talk on 1 side but the sound comes back on the otehr side. Hmmmm, hold it side ways then?
Okay phone, but be ready to accept some limitiations December 3, 2007 Jon 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Final update - I returned the phone (cannot remove the stars down to one, but that is my rating). Verizon updated the software to "Version 4" (phones come loaded with version 2 or 2.2), and said the hiss in the speaker, the problems connecting my Bluetooth device, and the dropped calls would be solved. The update did not fix any of that. I went with the new Motorola Z6C instead, and am much happier with the phone. I like the idea of the ruggedness of the G'zOne, but not at the expense of sound clarity. After 3 G'zOne phones in two weeks (plus trying demo units in the store), I had given enough time to the phone.
Update to below review, posted 12/11/07 - I recommend not purchasing this phone. It continues to have hissing sound in earpiece (3rd phone in two weeks), conversations are difficult as the phone varies in reception in areas where I have always had full signal with every other phone I have had, and the lack of any useable photo use (for those that want it) are reasons enough to stay away. But I have run into one or two other users who are okay with their purchase, so I would say that this is a hit or miss opportunity.
I have been a Motorola person since my first phone back in the early 90's. This phone seems pretty solid so far, and the feeling of it is much more substantial than the small flip phones out there - and you are less likely to drop it to begin with due to the curved surfaces.
My most pressing complaint is that there is hiss present when connected - although you only hear it when you are in a quiet room where other noises do not drown it out. I have replaced the phone with another new one and the hiss is still there. The new phone has signal issues - I drop calls where I never did (even on the first G'Zone) and the signal bars jump up and down when I am not moving (in metro DC that is not to be expected). I also use the phone out in the mountain areas of Western Virginia and the original G'Zone phone I had was excellent there (signal-wise). As far as not having analog capability, I travel quite a bit in not-so-populated areas and rarely (if ever anymore) switch over.
Aside from that, I also notice the camera is not very good - but I don't do pictures so it is not a problem. But if you like to snap pictures on any type of regular basis - pass this phone by. Pictures come out dark, and the light is all but useless in normal interior shots.
Also, it can be frustrating to get the clip opened to plug in the charger but as the phone is waterproof, that is to be expected (although the plug for the earphone connector is very easy to open - why not have the same thing for the charging port?). I also use the iGo charging system for my various devices and this phone is not supported. I do have some leads on the possibility that the LG phones VX8300, 9800 and 5300 might use the same plug. I have seen this phone listed as Audiovox, and it also has the name Qualcom on a sticker.
Overall, it is a very decent phone and if you can get past the hiss and do not need a camera phone - I recommend it.
