Amazon.com Product Description Slimmer, lighter and sweeter than ever, LG updates its Chocolate slider phone to the VX8550 with improvements including a new metal navigation wheel (which traces your finger's movement with a small light), vibrating touch keypad, and the ability to run the music player in the background while using the other features of the phone. But many of the much vaunted features of the original Chocolate remain: silky-smooth slider design support for V Cast Music, an integrated music/video player, a 1.3 megapixel camera/camcorder, stereo Bluetooth capabilities, and a microSD memory slot for up to 4 GB of storage. In addition to Verizon's V Cast Music feature, this phone is also enabled with the Get It Now service, which allows you to easily download ringtones, games, and applications. It runs on Verizon's CDMA 850/CDMA 1900 frequencies and EV-DO high-speed data network. (Learn more about where EV-DO coverage is offered.) Imaging and Entertainment

It's compatible with playing MP3, 3GP, and 3G2 video formats, and you can set a video as your screen's wallpaper (as long as it's under 5 MB in size). A built-in music player with a dedicated music key for easy access, stereo speakers and an equalizer, MP3 and WMA playback, and the ability to hide the music player while still allowing the music to play on in the background. You can create and manage playlists right on the phone, as well as synchronize music between the Chocolate and your PC (using an optional USB cable and connecting with Windows Media Player 10 or higher). You can also take advantage of the Chocolate's Bluetooth wireless headset capability, allowing you to hook up a pair of Bluetooth stereo headphones. Design The phone features a seriously attractive open-faced design with an internal antenna and a vibrant 240 x 320 pixel, 262,000-color TFT/TFD display. A touch sensor click wheel, similar to iPod, and sliding design set the phone apart stylistically. Opening the slider reveals a numeric keypad, as well as the 1.3-megapixel camera and LED flash, which are housed on the rear of the phone. The new navigation wheel with Trace Motion Light allows for easy navigation through phone functions, as well as quick and simple functionality while browsing music and videos. black cherry chocolate 2! August 23, 2008 i<3pnutbutter let me give a disclaimer that this is my 1st video/music/1.3 camera phone after using a phone that is 4 years old. i was filled with glee when i first got this one.
pros: + sleek, slim, and sexy slider phone + of good weight for a cell phone + color is awesome: dark bloody red! + nice finished gloss on phone + menu interface seems like other LGs. can move left to right for diff menus and up to down to look within each menu + each contact can have 7 info lines: mobile 1&2, home, work, email 1&2, fax + music is clear + music player stops when phone calls in! and plays once hung up! wow! + music shortcut smartkey is on the side of phone + complimented for the clear call quality!! + each side button/cover is of the glossy hard plastic, so no soft plastic covers! + 2gb microsd card + decent camera + has dedicated camera button + EZ tip calculator! interesting. + accessories can be found cheap
cons: - navigation wheel and touchpad are kind of too close together and my fingers sometimes tap on the touchpad when i meant to slide the wheel. both still sensitive to the touch. - navigation wheel feels flimsy to me - can't adjust music player volume until played. this makes for a loud noise when u decide to play it in a setting that is quieter than the last setting you were in. - needs headphone adapter - video recording isn't the sharpest but usable - zooming of video recording allowed but *clicking* of zoom is recorded loudly - phone lock is on too quickly (ie: when in music player and want to skip, searching through phonebook and pausing for a bit) - speaker is on back of phone so when music player is on, have to lie it face down to hear clearly - menu items are set and unchangeable (order-wise or items shown) - no games - number pad feels small to me. i end up misstexting letters - 5-minute alarm snoozes?! - bad ringtones that arrived with it - some pictures are undeletable that arrived with it
Horrible Phone August 22, 2008 M. Shiraga (USA) I have had this phone about 3 months and...
the battery dies within a day or 2 without even using
the screen goes out from time to time
the wheel feature is annoying and spins too fast
the touch pad feature is pointless and annoying since i tend to press on it while chatting on the phone
the screen scratches easily (not scratch free, must purchase a screen protector)
A pretty phone but annoying July 17, 2008 Alicyn (Alexandria, VA United States) I have had this phone about 6 months, I'm on my second one as the first one freaked out on me a few weeks ago and they had to replace it. It's a very pretty phone but not well designed. 1. Because of the slide I've had times where I take it from my pocket to answer and it slips shut hanging up on the person before I get it free. 2. the wheel is a pain and will slip when calling people making it tricky to get the right person all the time. 3. When you call a number that requires you to enter digital codes (like voice mail) it activates the front keys which will now start changing settings with your cheek so you have to remember to deactivate them after sending in numbers. this is a huge pain in the butt and has caused me to go onto mute while trying to dial in to a corporation and almost lose the call because I didn't realize it was on mute. 4. The voice activation does the same thing so you need to use it on speaker because if you try to use it without speaker the settings keep changing by touching your face. 5. I find myself constantly asking people what they said because I just don't hear them well (not using a bluetooth)
The speaker phone does work well, it takes decent pics.
I wish I never got this phone
LG chocolate is an okay phone and Verizon leaves a little to be desired July 13, 2008 Natalie Lawson (Orange County, California) We purchased two LG chocolate phones through Verizon five months ago. I should have purchased the phone through Amazon. Although Verizon promised what Amazon could deliver, it took several hour long phone calls to Verizon customer service and almost three months to actually get what Amazon could have done for us originally in one online purchase. Oops. Anyway, my chocolate phone seemed to do all that I required at first. Unfortunately, after three months, the wheel on the phone stopped working. Quite distressing. Two months later the phone was stolen. More distressing and too bad for the thief, as the wheel no longer worked. The subsequent calls (please note the use of the plural) to Verizon to deal with the theft of my phone resulted in several more hours of my time spent and the only thing Verizon succeeded in doing was shutting off the service to the other unstolen chocolate phone and listing the wrong phone on the lost/stolen list, thus rendering our only working phone unusable. Sadly, no one at Verizon much cared. We had switched from AT&T because of abysmal customer service but Verizon, thus far, is only marginally better. Perhaps this is just the state of phone service today and in retrospect, perhaps I would have been better off with a different phone. Or a rabid wombat.
Pretty cool but ... April 22, 2008 First time mommy from NYC (USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just received my chocolate a few days ago and I have say it is quite beautiful. The color is a deep, rich red and it is amazingly very light in weight. The navigation wheel is something I have to get use to since all my previous phones were the traditional flip-open type. I am still learning the features of this phone. So far what I do find annoying is the sensitivity of the four control areas around the wheel. Whenever I am trying to modify my phone settings, enter new entries in my phonebook or even browse through my music list the slightest touch to any of those control areas will change the screen. It is quite annoying and at times frustrating.
I never had a cell phone that played music so this one is a novelty. I opted to using the micro SD and an SD adapter for my pc. At first I couldn't download any songs onto the SD from my pc because it kept declaring that the SD was write-protected. What I found out later was that there is a lever at the side of the adapter that you have to slide to unprotect it. This information would have save me some frustration if it was mentioned in the SD package and/or the Chocolate manual. In fact the manual doesn't even mention anything on how to download music, pics or sounds from the pc using an micro SD or USB cable.
BTW I bought my Sandisk 1 GB with 2 adapters from Amazon at a very cheap price. Verizon was selling the same thing for twice as much.
To sum it up the LG VX8550 Chocolate is a pretty cool phone...so far.
