2 out of 5 stars Not worth the money   January 29, 2008

I agree with the earlier review by R. Cook that this program, although helpful in some ways, just isn't worth the money. It's very basic, and although perhaps useful to a very new investor to help organize his thoughts and investing strategy, if you're a more experienced investor, pass this one by. The quotes by famous investors such as Warren Buffett are sort of interesting, and the company report feature is useful, but overall, fifty bucks is about twice what the program is worth. At least for half that price it qualifies as an interesting but at least cheap diversion. Also, the package I got was the last one on the shelf, and it had obviously been returned since it had been opened and the CD removed from the paper sleeve. So whoever got it before me had returned it. I might do the same if they'll take it back.

2 out of 5 stars Heavy on Glitz, Short on Substance   November 13, 2006

I had been tracking my stock investments for years using an Excel spreadsheet and have longed for something more automated and robust. I was excited when I found this slick software and fired off an order immediately. However, "slick" was all it turned out to be. They spent a bundle in time and $$ on marketing and packaging--and it is very effective in selling the sizzle--but the steak is rancid. I am an everyday family investor like you, and not an investment guru. However, I am a career CPA and a corporate financial professional for 30+ years. I also have a Masters Degree in Technology Management. Therefore I like to think that I know a little about collecting and managing financial data, as well as desktop computer applications.

This software, with it's slick marketing, is not much more than a very simple spreadsheet, with the cute ability to suck in Internet pages. After entering 2 of my 30 or so stocks, I realized very quickly that I had blown $40 bucks. This package gives you nothing except the price you paid for the stock and the current quote--that's it!! (Unless you count the highly touted tips and techniques included from Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch, etc., which are useful but only a small piece of what you need IMHO).

Frustrated and disappointed, I immediately went in search for something with decent quantative data as well as the qualitative research tools. I found Personal Stock Monitor (not sold by Amazon), which BTW gives you a free 30-day trial to put the sofware through its paces before you fork over the cash. I love the power, flexibilty, simplicity--and the try-before-you-buy concept. I will be sending in my payment (about the same as Checklist Investor) long before my 30-day free trial is up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful tool for the individual investor   October 18, 2005

This tool helped me learn about and follow the investment strategies of Ben Graham, Warren Buffett, and Peter Lynch. I had read some investing books, but when it came time to make a stock purchase, I did not 'practice what they preached'. Checklist Investor helps me do that (and if I don't, I now at least have a record of why I choose not to follow their strategy).

The charting feature allows you to see how your investment ideas and transactions relate to stock price. It creates the chart very quickly.

The stock news reader is cool because you can save a copy of the news on your computer with one button click.

I also like the stock idea of the month feature.

The software is easy to install and use.
