Awesome January 4, 2009 D. Donato (Hartford, CT) Susan is great and this album is awesome. The second song, 700 houses with Derek Trucks on guitar is just mind blowing. Susan is someone who makes you feel the music and this album has great feeling, great songs, great playing, and is just Great!!! I cant wait for Derek Truck's New Album to come out later in January (09) and think its great that two fabulous musicians got together. This album will make anyone a fan of Susan and will make hardcore fans love her even more!!
A waste of talent January 3, 2009 E. Malloy (Pittsburgh PA) Ms Tedeschi can be a great blues singer, but she is not on this album.
she is surrounded with people who know how to play notes, but, for the most part, don't have a clue about how to play the blues. I just don't here anyone having any fun on these tracks.
Hopefully Ms Tedeschi will learn from this album and produce something commensurate with her talent.
Very good December 6, 2008 Michael Wheeler (Las Vegas, Nevada United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been familiar with Susan for years. I have heard previous albums and could not quite get myself to buy any. I was at the store yesterday and saw her new release and figured "what the heck" and bought it. I was plesently surprised. I find myself listening to not only her but Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall 11 backing her along with her band. The guitar is nothing short of excellent. You can hear a very strong Eric Clapton influence in her music. She also has a Janis Joplin influence as well as Bonnie Raitt. This in my mind is a must album for any fan. I have listened to it several times now and find myself liking it more and more.. Derek and his wife are a killer combination and both are at their very best. She writes her own songs and is at the top of her game.
Comfortable like an old pair of jeans November 25, 2008 John M. Sadowski (Kalamazoo, MI USA) I just recently learned of Susan Tedeschi -- like, today! I heard a few clips from Back to The River on a radio interview and was blown away. I came home and immediately downloaded the entire album, something I seldom do. Like most, I am track picker, but this album is well worth an entire album download. Here some comments on a few of my favorite tracks:
The opening track, "Talking About", hits a lick that conjures the spirit of Janis' Move Over and Susan's controlled vocals add the right amount of heat.
Title tune "Back to the River" is a gritty rocker about the pain of the road and missing home.
"Butterfly" cooks with a driving tempo. I'd love to hear this one live in a smokey basement juke joint. Feels right.
But my favorite track is "Can't Sleep at Night" a straight ahead blues ballad that hallmarks Susan's excellent tonality and solid playing. Something to listen to when all alone at 3AM. Nice.
Susan mixes the gravel in her voice with a sweetness that cuts through like the warmth of fine whiskey on a Fall evening. You could compare her to Bonny Raitt in the way she bends a musical phrase or Janis when she belts it hard. Both would be apt. But, not to belittle either of those legendary ladies of blues, Susan takes the whole experience to a higher level and greater sense of polish without feeling slick.
Back to the River is very listenable. I feel that with every play it will just get more comfortable -- like a favorite pair of old jeans.
