The Noise Can't Be Louder July 30, 2008 Flap Jackson (State Road, NC) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
When I first heard this comeback for the seemingly one-hit wonder that is The Verve on BBC Radio 1, I didn't really get it. There were strange background noises, and the lyrics were a bit bordering on the edge of radio-friendliness and insanity. But the song grows on you, and even though it's still strange, it's pretty original, but familiar alt/Brit rock.
Of course, if you really listen to his music, Richard Ashcroft has always been a little musically insane. These lyrics seem a bit dark, but mostly nonsensical, and somehow they come out a bit catchy. The music itself is amazingly upbeat, but a pretty good alt rock rhythm. The song musically culminates to something that would be good to listen to while flying in an airplane or such. Or at least that's what I picture.
But really, those crow sounds, and 'whoo hoos' are pretty darn creepy, and just downright strange.
So, listen to the song first, because odds are that you're not going to dig it. It's certainly different from the old Verve sound I know, which isn't much. But Richard Ashcroft has come a long way since Bittersweet Symphony, and so has the music world. So look this Brit alt rocker up, and you might actually like what you hear.
