Amazon.com essential recording Hipper students of 1980s pop might pretend that Joy Division and the Smiths had a monopoly on melancholia, but for the older, more suave brooders, nothing could match the stylized desolation of Roxy Music's last album. Avalon was recorded in the wake of the band's hit version of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy." Although that song isn't on Avalon, its tortured shadow looms large over "While My Heart Is Still Beating," the title track, and the unlikely Balearic anthem "More Than This." If time has been kind to Bryan Ferry's crumpled Armani chic, it hasn't exactly been vicious to his back catalog: Avalon sounds even more sumptuous now that the CD age has caught up with Rhett Davis's pristine production. --Peter Paphides

Avalon - remastered perfection December 23, 2008 Joseph C. Helton Having heard a bit about Roxy Music and enjoying some of their music, I finally took the plunge and purchased one of their cds, in this case the outstanding album "Avalon". Brian Ferry and company have put together something that really harkens to the 80s but yet is so timeless. The entire album flows with the perfect simplicity that only great albums do. Starting off with the hip, upbeat, almost ethereal "More Than This", Roxy Music leads the listener into a room of new wave bossanova, and hip noire and never varies from true artistry. The title track "Avalon" keeps a simple samba beat, bringing to mind the empty ballroom after a long party, a couple dancing on the dance floor. "India" is one of the very short instrumentals, sweet but all too brief. "While My Heart Is Still Beating" is a great moody piece. "Take A Chance With Me" starts off kind of cold and distant, but warms to a nice sunny tune that will have you whistling right along with it. "To Turn You On" is a song of aching longing. "True To Life" is another song that really brings back memories of the 80's new wave style, then "Tara", another short instrumental gently brings the cd to a close.
For anyone who has not heard anything by Roxy Music I can't make a higher recommendation than to try this cd. I think you will enjoy it. 5 stars.
roxy music----avalon October 27, 2008 Robert J. Geldert (minneapolis,mn.) not much of a roxy fan,but this cd seems less distinct then brian ferry's boys and girls.
The Perfect Ending October 2, 2008 Candi Pettas (Huntington, IN) Roxy Music's Avalon is a remarkable record both in it's songs and the fact that often makes me wonder what would have been next had they continued, but they left on a high note.
This record is steller from the first track to the last and the songs are just beautiful. More Than This, Avalon, Take a Chance With Me and To Turn You On melt mmy heart.
Turn down the lights and listen, it is a special experience.
Roxy at it's Best September 12, 2008 John DiDomenico (New York, NY) Every track on this album is excellent. The writing, recording and production put this album in the classic category. Bryan Ferry's voice is consistently amazing.
Avalon-remastered September 7, 2008 Michael Dlugosz (Cocolalla, Id) I downlaoded Avalon to my portable player. Quality is superior to most of the other music I've converted to mp3. And for about $8.00 I'm real happy.
