This Clint Eastwood vanity-project was one of the biggest box office disappointments of 1997, despite a masterful performance by Kevin Spacey, Eastwood's typically subtle direction and, to these ears anyway, one of the most satisfying collections of songs gathered in service of a film in many a year. It didn't hurt that they were all penned by the late, great Johnny Mercer (a native of Savannah, GA, the film's locale and most crucial, underrated element) and with the exception of Tony Bennett's "I Wanna Be Around" and Sinatra's classic "Summer Wind," were rendered by an all-star team of jazz players (Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Joshua Redman, Kevin Eubanks, Christian McBride among them) and an impressive line-up of vocalists including k.d. lang, Paula Cole, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Cassandra Wilson, Alison Krauss, Diana Krall, and Kevin Mahogany. Eastwood has long been a jazz devotee and, in recent years, eager proselytizer; this album plays like a love letter to one of his most beloved musicians and composers. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars two tears in a bucket   October 24, 2008

I purchased the cd because i love the movie and the book so much, and by the way the movie and book are very different. The soundtrack is amazing though i was never that familiar with Johnny Mercer songs but i know some of them very well now and the artists are excellent from KD Lang to Alison Krauss to Clint Eastwood to Kevin Spacy and more. I thoroughly enjoy this cd and feel you will too if you like this book, this movie, Johnny Mercer or any of the artists on the cd.

5 out of 5 stars feels just like savannah squares   October 3, 2008

I was planning to buy this cd for a long time, since I watch the movie, which is fantastic by the way. While listening to this cd you feel the kind of peace and joy you feel when you visit Savannah,GA. It's lovely and very romantic too. I'm very glad I bought it!

4 out of 5 stars Great CD   March 3, 2008

Purchased the sound track after I picked up the book and the DVD. Personal favorite.

4 out of 5 stars The Garden is very good   January 2, 2008

I really enjoyed each and every song on this excellent sound track. I've read reviews that panned Clint and his daughter, but I found their versions to be as well done as some of the more notable stars featured on the the CD. Recommend both the movie and the sound track

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Mercer at his best   September 10, 2007
T. J. Scharr (Midwest, USA)
This delightful CD, which was inspired by the movie of the same name, is a compilation of composer/singer Johnny Mercer's music by various artists. "Autumn Leaves" and "Fools Rush In" never sounded better than on this CD. Kevin Spacey does a passable rendition of "That Old Black Magic." Clint Eastwood joins the fun as he sings Mercer's "Accentuate the Positive" with his deep voice. This album will certainly make the day of all who love Jazz, the Standards and the music of Johnny Mercer.
