Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
14-track CD album - Carla Bruni has always had a certain poetry. A definite je ne sai quoi. The grace, style & beauty of this Italian-born, France-raised thirty-something is legendary; her intellect & vitality striking, even formidable. Now as the first lady of France, Carla Bruni is one of the most photographed women of the world but she doesn't want this to affect people's perception of her or her music. She wants the music to speak for itself and here it does.

4 out of 5 stars great   December 20, 2008

a really good cd. draws one into the music and swiftly into a
nice reflective or pensive mood.

5 out of 5 stars Decent album   December 8, 2008

I am not sure I like this as well as her older albums, but it is still pretty digestable.

2 out of 5 stars Dull...   November 17, 2008

I was curious to hear this CD given Bruni's notoriety over the years. Overall it's a dull outing. The production is virtually identical from song to song, with Bruni's average voice (sounds like a French Dido) mixed far forward with almost no reverb in every song. And there's nary a backing vocal or harmony track anywhere on this CD. Just the same presentation song after song. Was the producer asleep?

And the writing? Well the first tune, "Ma Jeunesse", grabbed me until I realized it's a virtual carbon copy of the Beatles' "For No One", down to the French horn solo. (Paul & co. should sue for copyright infringement.) Beyond that, I didn't hear any great melodies here.

Overall she'll remain more famous for her "off the record" activities...

4 out of 5 stars good come-back   October 6, 2008

carla bruni said in a recent interview that she hopes people will love her music; but if they don't listen to her because she's the first lady of France, she will also understand.

This album is in my opinion, less straight forward than her previous two. Carla experiments with more instrumentations and new sounds. There is a good variation of tunes and some of them take time to really delve into. My favorite is still her first album- simple, unpretentious. This one feels a bit hurried and unpolished.

4 out of 5 stars Does not disappoint   September 22, 2008

Nice overall record. Even though I don't speak the language, Carla Bruni is just so much more in French to me. "No Promises" fell short of my expectations because most of the songs were in English. This one is good, though nothing compares to the sexiness of "Quelu' un m'adit".
