There will likely be lots of scoffing at Marc Anthony's interpretation--both on disc and onscreen--of late salsa singer Hector Lavoe. But let's not forget that Anthony is a salsa superstar in his own right. He has anchored some of the genre's most thrilling moments and has taken salsa to audiences not normally exposed to the sweltering sound. The El Cantante soundtrack is a solid effort, notable for Anthony's dedication to recreating Lavoe's distinct delivery and phrasing. He puts aside his own emotive stylings for a more subdued performance on several tracks, including the celebratory "Mi Gente" and the mournful "Escandalo." Anthony is virtually unrecognizable during "Che Che Cole," "Quitate," and the standout "Que Lio," which makes the project all the more intriguing. Jennifer Lopez, Anthony's wife in real life and onscreen in El Cantante, croons pensive closing ballad "Toma de Mi." Lo interesante es que Marc Anthony hizo mucho mas que grabar las canciones de Lavoe con su estilo propio. El esposo de Jennifer Lopez frasea exactamente igual que el legendario salsero en este album, lo cual es todo un logro, ya que fue ese fraseo tan especial el que hizo a Lavoe un idolo. I have never really been a Jennifer Lopez fan, which is what initially stopped me from seeing the movie at the movie theatre. When the movie came out on HBO, I figured I would give it a chance, and I am so glad that I did. I fell in love with the movie and could not believe the excellent performances by both Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez!!! I became obsessive with the movie and found myself wanting to hear the music all of the time. I read some of the reviews in Amazon before I purchased the CD, and the one comment that convinced me to purchase it was that if you like salsa, you will love the CD.
I must say, I could not believe the negative comments that I read and felt that they were really unfair and harsh toward Marc Anthony. No one can act exactly like someone else without spilling over a bit of their own personality and emotions into a role, however, in this case he made Hector look and sound even better. He did one hell of a job and deserves a lot of credit. I could not think of anyone else who would have been more appropriate to play the role of Hector LaVoe than Marc Anthony. I think Hector would have been proud. Marc really gives Hector's music justice and brings so much passion to the screen. Hector was the salsa King in his day, and Marc Anthony is today's salsa KING!!!!! Thank you Marc!!

Este cd llego a mis manos por cortesia de un amigo, pues ni cagando me atreveria a comprarlo. Aun asi, siendo admirador de Hector Lavoe me parecio que podia al menos escucharlo a ver de que se trataba.
No es otra cosa que Marc Anthony tratando de imitar la voz de Hector, cuestion que no tiene nada de interesante. La orquesta no suena mal pero aun asi le doy una sola estrella.
En mi opinion muy personal, este disco ha tenido acogida porque da la impresion que ya nadie sabe nada de salsa y la unica referencia que tienen es Marc Anthony. Marc Anthony es un cantante del monton sin nada extraordinario. Cuando salio cantando salsa a inicios de los 90s cantaba en las teletones en altas horas de la madrugada, teniendo la misma voz que muchos ahora califican de excepcional. Antes habian mas exponentes de la Salsa (Willie Gonzalez, Eddie Santiago, Lalo Rodriguez, Conjunto Chaney, Puerto Rican Power, Tony Vega, Santa Rosa, Rey Ruiz, Grupo Niche, Hermanos Moreno, incluso Jerry Rivera, etc. etc) y Marc Anthony nunca pudo sobresalir por encima de ellos. Ahora por ser casi el unico lo han agrandado como si fuera un Hector Lavoe y para colmo incluyen un tema de Jennifer Lopez.
No compren esta vaina y busquen otras opciones.

I just don't see why people think this is such a great album. Marc Anthony doesn't sing as well as Hector Lavoe and it sounds like he is imitating him and at least I can tell, he just is not believable and if Marc Anthony is going to sing Hectors songs he should just interpret the music it in his own way. No one sings like Hector so if you like his music buy his albums you can't go wrong!

I loved the movie and the music so I bought this CD. I am extremely happy with my purchase. The music is phenomenal. Marc Anthony does Hector Lavoe some serious props here. Bravo Marc Anthony....the only disappointment here is the last trac, Jennifer Lopez's "Toma de Mi." IT TRULY SUCKS! The song stinks and her vocals sound like someone is strangulating a Sea gull. This should of never been included in this CD....Other than JLo's lousy singing and song, the CD is great. Buy it and when you get to JLo's song, stop the CD....
