The term "classic" is tossed about a lot these days, and when it's being used to describe everything from Coke to a Janet Jackson CD, the term is shady. But take my word that the 1972 soundtrack to the blaxploitation film Superfly is a true classic. Why? Because 25 years after its release, the songs still ring true and sound fresh. A morality tale set to funky grooves and plaintive vocals, Superfly is the zenith of Mayfield's socially aware songwriting, recounting the highs and lows of the thug life and the no-win ghetto game of hustling. It's hard to believe, but a doom-filled ode to screwing up ("Freddie's Dead") was actually a big hit during the Nixon years. Truth be told, the record sounds as good, if not better, today and should be in everyone's collection. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars A SOUNDTRACK MASTERPIECE.   September 2, 2008
Eric Robinson (DETROIT, MI)
This is my favorite Curtis Mayfield album hands down. He really layed it out on this soundtrack for the movie. He was as real as real could get about the street life and the drug dealer and just the whole infrastructure of the street life and the players within the game. The tracks on this album is right on. A must have. That's all I have to say.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greats.   May 31, 2008

1972 was a great year for music. So many classic albums were released that it would be a trying task indeed to name the best.

I've tried. And I've concluded. Best album of 1972? You're on it's page.

Curtis Mayfield was a musical genius. Not only does this album represent the peak of his career, it's also one of the Top 5 soul/R&B/funk albums of all time. This album will calm and rev you up at the same time. It's got that kind of magic. Seduction on wax. Recorded music has a long history of producing a truckload of great albums, but a select few have the honor of being called absolutely PERFECT. This is one of the lucky ones. There isn't a note that doesn't belong here. 37 minutes of glorious musical nirvana.

Superfly is an indelible part of my life. Along with the music of Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, the Stones, Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley and lots of other greats, I couldn't imagine going through life without the privilege of having direct access to it. And for ten bucks? A steal.

There's two types of people in the world - those who love Curtis Mayfield and those who aren't familiar with him yet. Join us!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed   May 27, 2008

Unfortunately I cannot say I enjoyed my purchase.
In fact I've paid for it but I received my CD literally in pieces.
Although the package showed no sign of damage when I opened the package the CD was broken.
So far I have not received any reimburse for my loss.
