Though Shelby Lynne has already reinvented herself more than once, never has her musical transformation seemed more inspired than on this release that finds the maverick Nashville artist channeling Dusty Springfield. While much of the material comes from the classic Dusty in Memphis (where the British pop singer reinvented herself with a dash of Southern soul), Lynne has recorded more than another collection of covers. With the sparest of arrangements and superb production by Phil Ramone, she inhabits these songs from the inside out, frequently offering transformations that provide revelations on both the material and Lynne's artistry. Throughout, she embodies the wistfulness of the worldly-wise other woman; one who is willing to settle for what she needs. There's a heart-stopping intimacy to the album-opening title cut, and the acappella intro renews the familiar "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me." She recasts Springfield's earlier "I Only Want to Be with You" from jangly teeny-bop into a sultry and sophisticated ballad with a Brazilian lilt. In addition to material from such master tunesmiths as Burt Bacharach ("Anyone Who Has a Heart," a particularly seductive "The Look of Love") and Randy Newman ("I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore"), Lynne offers her own "Pretend" as a hit that Springfield could have had. The yearning rendition of the Rascals' "How Can I Be Sure" provides the perfect cap for an album that establishes Lynne as a superb interpretive stylist. --Don McLeese

I like Dusty Springfield. I like Shelby Lynne. I love Shelby Lynne singing songs that used to be condsidered to be "Dusty's." And I say "used to be considered" meaning to use those words.
It was funny a few years ago when some kid asked his father about Paul McCartney, who was then singing with Wings, "Dad, didn't he used to be in another band?" Well, a similar question might now be asked about these songs, "Did someone else sing that song years ago?" I do not mean to diminish Miss Springfield and would not be able to do so even if that were my intent. I mean only to say that these songs in Miss Lynne's capable hands have an emotional appeal on an entirely different level than that of Miss Springfield. I believe that Miss Lynne's treatment of these songs accurately conveys the emotions meant to be conveyed by the words themselves. And, that is better done with only the accompaniment of a piano or with no accompaniment at all than with that of an orchestra in the context of a "production."
This is a record for the ages. If you buy it, you'll listen to it over and over. You may as well not put it back on the shelf because it won't be long until you pull it out again, and again.

Not too many white females can claim the privilige of achingly romantic blues renditions done in their OWN way.
i do think this album not only does that but her unique voice and style tell a story not only her own but that of her audience; don't listen to it unless you are prepared.

Very disappointed in this CD. The woman has no range and I was bored (imagine-a boring Bacharach song) I was hoping that someone could do justice to Dusty. Not to be, at least, not yet.
