VERY slow shipment January 7, 2009 L. Adams (Houston, TX) I ordered the item on 11/10 for a birthday on 11/22. It was scheduled to arrive 11/18 - 11/21. I didn't receive it till 11/24 after the party. Very disappointed!
Excellent Value and Function, For What It Is January 2, 2009 Opinionator (Brooklyn, USA) We've bought two of these, the first as a gift, the second for us.
They're manufactured in China, and the finish can be quite variable, not to mention a bit hasty. Hopefully, though, you'll keep it for decades, if not generations, and as it gets beat up, the patina may add to its charm and hide any original defects in the finish.
The gift recipient was ecstatic and thought it was the best nutcracker he had ever seen. Also, he found it very easy to use, even with his arthritic hands. We're exceedingly happy with ours, too, even though it came with sloppier chrome plating than the first one. For the price, it's a wonderful gizmo, fun to show to other people, who are generally fascinated with seeing it work.
It works like a charm, for what its designed to do: cracking a bunch of nuts from the same tree in a hurry. Adjust it properly, and you can shell a lot of nuts with a lot less work. This is clearly not intended for casual use with a bag of mixed nuts. Use something else for that, unless you really enjoy adjusting things a lot.
It has a very wide range of adjustment, but it doesn't come with instructions, and a couple other reviewers didn't figure it out one important thing for themselves.
You know that little smooth part that sticks out the back of the adjustable screw, that you probably use as a handle to adjust the screw? That's the end for cracking small nuts. Remove the screw, turn it around with the small end facing the piston, and it adjusts perfectly for small nuts. It will crack small filberts without having to "suspend" the screw at all. The entire thing can be inside the threads, flush with the back end, and crack small nuts.
While you could probably cheat for medium-small nuts, and simply screw the large end in so far that the threads were no longer fully seated in the housing, you're risking wrecking it. It's not designed for that.
Overall, it's a great tool, a great value, and if you're an optimist, any defects in the finish just make it look more like a quaint antique that came out of the back of the garage. We love it.
Nut cracker works great December 26, 2008 Mary E. Myers
After cracking many pecans with a hand cracker this is a great improvment. Although you still need to do some picking it still takes alot of the work out of cracking by hand.
super product December 16, 2008 Gerald Humphrey This is a really great product. It's solid and sound and it's a product that really works. I wouldn't give it back.
Great Product December 14, 2008 R. Hedrick (IL) Item performs exactly as advertised. Cracks the toughest nuts with minimum damage to nut meat. Saves on getting cramps in the hand like the hand crackers. We would recommend this product.
