2 out of 5 stars Would-be awesome, but for one HUGE flaw...   June 27, 2008
R. Novak (S. Korea)
There was nothing about this Sony Dream Machine alarm clock I didn't like at first. The display was huge and easy to read, there were 2 alarms so couples could wake at different times, and it played CDs, had a line-in jack for my Zune, and the audio quality was pretty good. It even picked up some stations my previous clock radios couldn't get. So what was the problem?

My new house suffers from frequent brown outs, where the power flickers but doesn't go out completely. I discovered very quickly what a clock with no battery backup option is worth - nothing. When I bought this Sony, I assumed it had a place for batteries in case the power went out, so you wouldn't have to reset the time or alarms. After all, it's 2008 and I hadn't seen a clock with no battery option in years and years. In some ways, it's like selling a new car with no tires. As good as this clock is in every other respect, the lack of battery backup brings it from a 5-star rating to a 2-star rating. I don't know what they were thinking when they left this feature off. Be late for work one time and see how important batteries are.

Recommended? No.

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE: Falsely Described as Playing MP-3 Encoded CDs!   June 21, 2008
D. Schulz (PLANO, TX USA)
Purchased as a means of listening to MP-3 files on CD-R discs, and although it explicitly describes this capability in the product description, it has no such ability!! It sneered at the cds with mp3 files, and none of the box descriptions nor the scant "manual" mentions this facility. Since others have also reported in earlier reviews, it's disappointing that Amazon hasn't fixed the description yet.

By the way, the tuner wasn't very good at all, either. Sound, what you expect for $40.

4 out of 5 stars Solid quality   June 8, 2008
Dr. Dreed

The sound is very nice, and good volume range (it can get quite loud)
The unit is on the large side, and the numbers very visible (takes a lot of room on the bed table).
The two alarms are nice. The sleep function is nice too. And each alarm (A and B) can bet set independently to either CD, Radio, Buzzer, or Off.
I'm totally happy with it.

1 out of 5 stars Alarm does NOT work!!!   June 1, 2008
Stanley Cup (Holly Springs, NC)
We bought this clock radio for my son because he wanted a CD player with a clock radio, and I liked the big, easy to read numbers on the display screen. It had all the features we were looking for, including a dual alarm system. Then, we took it out of the box and were nothing but disappointed.

First, the volume control on the bottom right of the clock is not easy to get to--not a big deal, but you would have hoped a design engineer would have come up with a better place to reach for a volume dial. Second, the radio tuner dial is just that--a dial. Unless you have a very precise touch, it is not easy to tune in a radio station, and once you do, the reception is not great. (We hade a clock radio in the same exact spot in his room before we got this one, and it got great reception, so we know it is possible to get a good signal.) Third, and most importantly, the alarm did NOT work. We set the alarm for him at night when he went to bed, and in the morning, the alarm light "A" was no longer lit and the alarm never went off. I tried resetting the alarm again, and to no avail, it never went off. I took the clock radio back to the store and exchanged it for the exact same model, and we had the exact same problem. Alarm "A" would look like it was set, but at some point during the night, it de-programmed itself. We took the second one back to the store as well, and as luck would have it, there was a working model on display. I asked the salesman to show me how he would set the alarm, he input in a time for Alarm "A", we waited, and it did not work. Three strikes and you are out! I can not recommend this model since I had nothing but problems with it--twice.
