Terribly over-priced non functional cooling unit. November 3, 2007 Thomas J. Gernandez (Midwest) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Simply put if your Xbox is having overheating issues and you are looking to solve them with this product. Look elsewhere! I have had limited freezes due to over-heating mostly because I keep my window open to allow very cold (45-50 degrees) breezes splash onto the rear of my machine. Now, your paying 20.00$ for a 4$ CPU fan and probably 2$ worth of plastic. Not only that but hooking the USB connection to the xbox IS NOT SAFE. As stated earlier an Xbox360 Power-supply is only rated and created with the SOLE intent to power all internal operations. Powering a USB fan will ultimetly leave you with a broken 360. To counter this I bought a USB extension cord, hooked it up to the pelican and into my Computer instead. So in total 20$ Fan. 8$ extension cord with pretty much ZERO results. My machine is not cooler. It doesn't freeze but thats because I let the xbox rest. It seems the only solution to overheating xbox's is probably a large fan (a room fan with a high CFM) An open window for cold air. Or allowing your machine to rest and recouporate. The title to my review says it all.
Don't know if you need these really??? September 28, 2007 D. Turner (IL) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this for my grandson and I don't think he uses it. XBOX do get a hot but????? He seems to do OK without it.
No complaints April 1, 2007 Clarence E. Fouche After hearing about the various overheating problems with the 360, I figured I had better take some kind of preventive measure, and that I should get something other than the intercooler. The fan stand has served me well so far, it keeps the unit stable and it seems to generate extra airflow. The only hot spot on my 360 is in the rear vent area, but that is quite normal, I have never received the overheating warning (two red lights on the left). Some people commented that blocking off the side vents when using the extra storage spaces would cause your game boxes to melt, but I have never felt it warm in those areas so I will try using that more often. I later switched the fan stand over to a USB hub apart from the 360, but I switched back after a few weeks and didn't notice any change in performance. I have used my 360 in the upright position almost the entire time I've had it (since Christmas) and I've never had a problem with a disc. Last week I even accidentally hit my dresser hard enough to rock the unit back and forth on the stand while it was running, and it stayed in the game and did not damage the disc in any way (PLEASE don't test that out, I was really upset at myself for letting that happen!). Overall I think the stand is a good idea, but don't expect miracles, the unit won't do well if it is crammed into a tight space even if you have every cooling device available on it.
A Fan's a Must-Have for XBox 360 Owners January 14, 2007 Lisa Shea 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
If you've got an XBox 360, you know exactly why you need a fan stand. This unit gets very hot, and the built in fan - while loud - just isn't up to the task of keeping it cool.
The unit is designed very simply. You sit your 360 into this stand, and it cools the unit from below. You can put one game box to the right side, and your remote to the left. Really, that's not why you get the unit though :) It's all about the fan.
If you haven't been watching the news or hanging out with other gamers, the XBox 360 is VERY prone to crashing and completely melting down due to heat issues. Part of this might be that gamers lay their XBox 360s down on the ground - blocking all the vents so the system can't get normal air flow - or they jam their unit into a corner where the heat builds up. This system really needs to have ample air cooling around it and be in a vertical position. This stand helps to make sure you get that vertical position and that you have extra cooling. You REALLY want to keep the unit - like any computer or electronic device - away from lint, dust and other air-junk. Hopefully you are vacuuming frequently - and if you have a carpeted floor - have the unit on a piece of wood or something else to protect it.
By default the unit is USB powered so that you can plug it into the XBox 360 and then plug an USB item into the fan. However, it's sort of silly to make the XBox 360 work harder (and get hotter) to then power a fan to cool it down :) It's much better to plug the fan into the wall directly so that the XBox 360 gets as cool as possible while the fan draws its power from the wall. Most gamers have the necessary USB wall plug to handle this pretty easily - and if you don't, it's a cheap item to get.
The only real down side is that the fan has a manual on switch, but in the grand scheme of things, that's not a huge issue especially since you want it to turn on and off independently of the XBox 360. Also, I suppose you could complain about the fan's quiet noise, but since the XBox 360 is already a noisy machine, that's pretty much a wash.
Considering how much money an XBox 360 costs, and how frequently the average owner plays with it, it is VERY worth it to keep it cool and running well.
