5 out of 5 stars Every year there's enough improvements to justify getting a new one   December 4, 2008
M. Su (Los Angeles, CA USA)
Every year I look forward to the season opener and a new NBA 2K. This year is no exception, the quality of the upgrades on this game justifies spending $60 on it.

#1 Graphics - I thought 2K8 was good, somehow 2K9 made it even better, even more realistic. Countless times my wife walks past and says there's basketball at this hour?

#2 Controls - The post play controls are really tight, there's a lot of moves and fakes, it may take time to learn and get comfortable with all of it, but once you do, it feels very realistic.

#3 Commentary - Unfortunately this is a bit of a backstep IMO. I liked Steven A. Smith, and there's more bugs than last year like wrong names, wrong teams said in the wrong situation.

#4 Updates - 1 month past the release and there's a big patch out that allows 2K8 to update the roster as soon as the real NBA roster updates, now that's really cool. That one was function EA's NBA Live had and missing from 2K.

#5 Association - It's very deep, yet can be fully automated as well. The trades system got easier to manage, option to automate parts of the scouting or draft if you don't want to micromanage everything.

Other than Yao Ming getting blocked by AI, the rest of the game feels very realistic. Overall, well worth the $60 spent, now it's another year of waiting until 2K10 comes out. Hm... Wonder if they'll change the name, that doesn't sound right. Two K Ten.

4 out of 5 stars great game   November 30, 2008

the graphics are vastly improved over last year and the general game presentation is a lot better. Not a lot of improvements but if you're an avid sports gamer this title is worth picking up if not you'll probably be all right with last year's version.

5 out of 5 stars NBA 2K9   November 12, 2008

The game is amazing, the best basketball game for the PS3 that I have tried. Ordering from Amazon was a little frusterating this time. Although the shipping was considered free, the US Postal Service took twice as long as UPS or FedEx. Also, I tried ordering something else to include with this order almost immediately after placing it. Amazon said the order was already filled and I couldn't add anything else even though it didn't ship for 4 more days.

5 out of 5 stars Get NBA 2k9 !!   November 10, 2008

NBA 2k series has always been my favorite basketball video game. 2K9 brings the greatest basketball simulation that exceed their predecessor. You have to put a lot of effort to score a basket. I found it hard to win a game relying on one player driving all around the court like what I did on 2k7 or 2k8. The defense is more competitive with the offense since the D-Lock on feature from 2k8.
The graphic is really nice compare to NBA live 09. I tried the Live 09 demo, the players look skinny, but have a better detail on the player graphics. However, the game play itself the 2k9 still way ahead the NBA live 09.

The only downside for 2k9 is that the create player face is really hard to be customized. Most of the created players faces who have the same race are just look the same.

Overall, I 2k9 is worth of your money. I played this game almost everyday and I never get tired of it.

1 out of 5 stars I shudder to think about how many times this game has frozen my PS3.   November 8, 2008

Simply an unacceptable release of an unready product. When you finally manage to successfully launch a game online, the inexcusably awful and arbitrary free-throw shooting mechanism almost renders the game unplayable. Winning a close game basically boils down to who's feeling more hot at the charity stripe. Also why can't we challenge our friends online? That's an absurd downgrade from every prior version of NBA 2K with online capability. I'm going to check out NBA Live this year for the first time in ages. If that's no good, I shall forego video game basketball this year.

Edit: Another disappointment I forgot to mention is that 2K removed the best 2 camera options (in my opinion) when you play online: the 2K and Drive camera views. This is especially rough for someone like me who's gotten hooked on the overhead, 180 degree rotating view. The only reasonable option left is the side view (e.g. NBA JAM) which I haven't used in an NBA game since at least the year 2000.
