Amazon.com Product Description Stay alert to conditions that affect you with Midland's WR-300 weather/all-hazard radio. The unit offers S.A.M.E. technology (Specific Area Message Encoding), which preprograms the device to receive only those warnings that apply to your local area--you can choose state, county, and/or nearby counties. The single-speaker radio offers 30 programmable county codes, AM/FM tuning, date, time, alarm functions, and even auto switch from AM/FM to pertinent all-hazard alerts. For tuning, the radio employs drift-free PLL (phase-lock loop) technology and an easy-to-read blue, backlit LCD. You get a convenient, 10-alert memory, and you can add, edit, and remove unwanted alerts at any time. The radio uses the supplied AC power adapter or four AA Batteries (not included). What's in the Box Radio, AC power adapter, and a user's manual.

Excellent July 3, 2008 K. Klefman (Jacksonville Florida) I have been very impressed with this radio. The S.A.M.E. technology makes the difference. I can also go through a list to select only the alerts I'm interested in receiving. I am not annoyed at it when it goes off, in fact it's in my kitchen and now I can get the daily weather every morning and listen to the radio when I cook. I love it.
Excellent for all conditions. July 2, 2008 Professor Jim (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fl) A few years ago, I bought my children each a "Red Cross" Eton emergency radio. Great if you are in an emergency and looks like that is where it belongs. Recently, I moved to a hurricane risk area (replete with violent summer storms, etc) and researched a purchase for myself. Based on their experience with Eton and my new needs I selected the Midland. I want it near my bed at night (it is attractive), I want to not be awakened by a NWR alert on the other side of the state (it has SAME technology that allows receiving alerts for only the counties you want to hear about),I can still use it during an emergency (It runs on an AC adapter, but contains 4 AA batteries for when then power goes off - and it receives AM/FM to find local emergency broadcasting)and I don't really need the lights, sirens and chargers on the Eton (have Coleman 6D cell florescent, 6D mag light and various rechargable LEDs for light and a car recharger for my cell). I find it to be in much better balance with my needs for less money.

The NWS sends what is called an EOM (end of message) command after each of their broadcasts. This will "silence" a radio after a message, if the radio supports it. If you are spoiled like me, and expect the WR-300 to silence itself after a alert, you are going to be disappointed. I am shocked, as most "modern radios" have it. Midland needs to get into the year 2000....wow....
The WR-300 was tested against my old, obsolete Radio Shack radio, which DOES support EOM :)
The WR-300 was programmed as single county, with only tornado watch and tornado warning as the alerts. Things were going smooth with alerts all week, until one night, when it alerted ALL the tornado warnings in the listening area. My old radio never falsed, proving that NWS didn't have a problem. Midland's tech support confirmed my programming was correct. He said he never "heard of this problem", and believes it was NWS fault. No one else I talked to in my area had that problem. Sure Midland...never your fault...
So, I returned it. It's bad enough not supporting EOM, but to false alarm too???
As a side note, I have worked for a couple two-way communication firms in my time. Midland has never been on my top 10 list. This incident proves why. Poor tech support, and an overall poor product. I had hoped they had changed that...
Let the buyer beware.
Good radio June 30, 2008 Big Daddy (TN) I bought this for myself and then after using it for a while, decided it would make a great gift. Everyone should own one of these. It is highly customizable and relatively easy to set up. Your family deserves to have this type of protection. I should have done this a long time ago.
excellent weather radio June 27, 2008 S. Wiles love the feature of not having to be disturbed by all allerts. can select which results to be notified about and which counties
