Amazon.com Except for feature-length animation, the musical has gone the way of the dinosaur. The Walt Disney company took a stab at reviving the live-action musical in 1992 with Newsies, a throwback picture with a curious subject. In 1899, the pint-sized newsboys delivering the New York papers go on strike against the unfair practices of news magnates Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. The production is heavy on kiddie humor, although Christian Bale (the child star of Spielberg's Empire of the Sun) is charismatic as one of the older leaders of the revolt. The adult stars don't fare as well, with Robert Duvall doddering around as Pulitzer and Ann-Margret and Bill Pullman doing decorative duty. The film was not well received when first released, but hindsight reveals its charm (and allowed the young target audience to catch up with the picture on video). The first-time director is Kenny Ortega, the choreographer of Dirty Dancing, who brings plenty of energy to the action. --Robert Horton

Newsies Purchase from hermanstreet_music November 17, 2008 C. Brown The order was shipped in a really fast manner, and was NEW exactly as described. Due to a mail organizing problem to the address it was sent to, I contacted the seller with questions, which they answered in a courteous and timely manner. Thanks!
Can't believe I missed this one back in 1992... November 17, 2008 J. Doedtman (chicago, IL) I just watched this movie for the first time on Starz kids & family and absolutely loved it! Perhaps Disney was ahead of its time releasing a movie musical with popular actors singing and dancing like the very popular HSM series. Christian Bale (the newest batman) is great as a young actor and carries this film. I also enjoyed the large scale production numbers and the music. I say this is a must buy for my nieces & nephews this Christmas and I'm sure to get a copy for myself as well. joe
My new favorite movie!! October 31, 2008 ReaderGirl (USA) From the very beginning, I loved this movie. The opening song "Carrying the Banner" made me shiver (in a good way). And I have to say, I'm extremely impressed at all of the boys in this movie. They created such a friendly, family-like atmosphere together. There are some great dancers, great singers, great actors...it's all great! The story in and of itself is based on a true story about the Newsie strike in the 1800's, which makes it somewhat educational. Christian Bale and his co-stars pulled off great performances, especially considering many of them knew nothing about dancing and singing at first. It's completely family-friendly film, with great songs, great dance numbers, and a message that promotes kids and equality.
Excellent Movie! October 30, 2008 J. Westenskow (UT USA) My husband loves this movie! He looked everywhere for it but couldn't find it for less than $20 wherever he found it. I was so excited to find it here for such a great deal! I gave it to my husband as a gift and he was thrilled! It arrived quickly and in great condition!
Wow, what a masterpiece!! October 17, 2008 Anja Schmidt (Denmark) Well really... I don't know how else to define this movie, except maybe that it's a really wonderful and precious masterpiece!!! Everything about this movie, with very few very small slips, is just poifect!! The story is really great and, unlike musicals such as HSM, it's really meaningful! Boys going against the powerful, you've gotta love it!! Some think that it might have been better if it wasn't a muscial, and maybe it would have been really good too, buuut it would not have been the same wonderful movie!! The dancing and the singin' is just awesome!! So full of spirit!! Great lyrics, great music and great voices!! So originally! They boys does such an amazing job. And I gotta say it; Christian Bale is an absolutely stunning singer AND dancer (Santa Fe is just heartmeltingly beautiful!!) He's just poifect as the cunning, tough, and dreamy Jack Kelly!! Sooooo charming!! Besides what is there not to love about a Disney movie where young guys/boys smoke, soak every sucker that they can and the girl get's a very, well, WOW kiss - very unlike Dinsney ;) It's the best musical I've ever seen, and it's certaintly Disneys best feature movie, if you ask me. I won't compare it with the animated disneys flicks, 'cause I just don't think cartons and feature films should be compared. Last, I just wanna say that Newsis is a golden movie and a timeless classic cult flick!! Watch it, and I bet you will love it!!!!
