1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for...   December 4, 2007

As mac webcams go, this is about as cheap as you can get. And yes, it is Mac OS compatible. I notice the specs have been changed to say "all mac os." But this is not what I have found.

I bought this camera to use with iChat AV, since it clearly states that it is compatible with a Mac. Well, it IS, BUT. Installing the macam driver just gives you a way to see yourself on your mac. Yay. You can take pictures, mess with settings, and record clips. But you can't chat. You have to buy a third party driver for that, which is only $10. (iChat USB, for those in need.) But ever since I installed Leopard (on my G4 Powerbook) I get nothing. No image, no matter what. Just black. iChat acts like the camera is there, but no picture. So does the macam app, for that matter. So my cheap little toy doesn't work anymore.

As far as the image went when it was working, even though you can adjust the settings, it is hard to get a good image out of this. It looks washed out or over saturated, depending on the background. My advice is to pay a little more and get a camera with tech support, that knows macs...

1 out of 5 stars Cheap, marginally functional, many better options.   November 10, 2007

Avoid this, at least if you have a Mac & a budget for something better. (Tested with PowerMac G5, Mac OS 10.4.10)

The Frisby web-cam EVA CAM-106 claims "1.3 Mega pixels" but this is only thorough interpolation. Like most cheap webcams, it is really only 640x480. Software doubles the resolution horizontally & vertically and puts in an "average" pixel in between. So watch out for that weasel word "interpolated" or "software resolution" .

The bundled software is only for PC's and probably not Vista. The manufacturer's web site claims "Write for link to Mac driver", this turns out to be just the open-source MACAM which works for the vast majority of USB web-cams. (So, to answer the above question, "Yes, sort of".)
The camera does not support USB 2 speeds, making it very slow. Again, weasel words on the packaging: "Compatible with USB 2.0" means back-compatible.

The refresh rate is poor and images are blurry. Image quality (with Macam) is mediocre and took much software tweaking to make it even marginally acceptable. Brightness control is sensitive, images are either overexposed or underexposed. The 6 white LEDs are annoyingly bright (there's a dimmer control on the cable)and the tiny manual-focus ring on the lens is a pain. Depth of field is not very good, so unless it's a pretty specialized application you will tolerate some fuzziness or take lots of pictures of your hand reaching for the focus ring.

After a few minutes it drops USB communication with MACAM, you have to unplug & re-plug. The cable has the microphone jack separating from the USB jack about 8" from the end, making it inconvenient at best.

I really wish I hadn't sold my iSight. It was 100 times better this, at 10 times the price.

This isn't a review.. But I wasn't sure how to contact anyone another way. I want to know if this product is compatible with a Macintosh computer. The last webcam I bought didn't specify and the computer didn't accept it.
Please respond.
thank you
