Amazon.com Bestselling author and Christian apologist Josh McDowell hopes The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict will further document historical evidence of the Christian faith. As such, it is a straightforward compilation of notes prepared for his lecture series, "Christianity: Hoax or History?" The entire book (over 750 pages) is laid out in outline form, which makes it easier for researchers, scholars, and students to access. As a result, this is not reflective fireside reading. Rather, it is a tool for locating supporting "evidence" whenever the need arises. Part I addresses the trustworthiness of the Bible; Part II offers historical evidence and supporting attestations for Jesus' claim to God; Part III addresses "radical Christian criticism" of the Bible; Part IV is devoted to quelling the voice of numerous skeptics, including "a defense for the existence of miracles" and "answers to divergent worldview."

An Appeal to the Mind August 25, 2008 Happy Camper 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This update of Mr. McDowell's original "Evidence" book should help it become a favorite for a new generation inquiring minds. A careful read is akin to taking a college-level course in Christian apologetics, except there's no final exam. It arms the reader with an enormous array of facts, figures, stunning quotations, and arguments that support the reasonableness of the Christian faith. It also debunks a lot of specious assertions against important tenets like the accuracy of scripture and the historicity of Jesus. It can be a huge eye-opener, even for people who grew up in a church. I particularly like the way he handles the "liar, lunatic, or Lord" question, the demonstration that today's scriptures are very close to the original writings, and the arguments that many people who saw the resurrected Christ were willing to die for their beliefs. If you want to be fully equipped to give a complete and compelling answer the question of why you believe what you do, you need to say more that "it works for me". (After all, in times of trial you will be asking yourself this very question!) A command of this material will provide you with innumerable legs on which your faith can firmly stand. This is not a quick read; it is more like diamond mining, where your persistence will be richly rewarded.
Unapologetic August 25, 2008 Ming 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is the latest version of Josh McDowell's classic on Christian apologetics. This extensive work follows an outline form consisting of the author's study notes on the historical and intellectual arguments in favor of the Christian faith. While it is useful to students and scholars, it has broader appeal:
In an age of skepticism and hostility to religious faith, all believers and potential believers need to be equipped with facts and arguments that will allow their minds to accept what their hearts know to be true. In other words, McDowell does not attempt to prove the God of the Bible is real and the narrative is true, but rather brings the reader to the point where faith only involves the next logical step rather than an irrational leap into the dark.
All Christians face challenges to their faith and go through times of questioning. During those struggles it is very useful to ponder the reams of evidence that led them to their original verdict. It helps sustain them during the battle.
Also, in an age of feel-good sermons and canned Sunday school programs, the core material McDowell offers is often overlooked, leaving people with insufficient understanding of why they believe what they hear and read.
This book is not for those with shallow interest in the Christian faith or with lazy minds. But for those who already believe, it will bolster their confidence in their beliefs, and for seekers, it will help them see that it takes more faith NOT to believe.
I particularly recommend this book for people in their formative teen years. It is not likely they will otherwise have the opportunity to consider this fascinating and compelling array of evidence. It provides food for many years of thought and further study.

This is a readable book for the lay person. Very thought provoking. It is written in the comman man's language.
This book changed by life June 2, 2008 Colin D. Sulin (San Diego,CA USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is easily one of the best Christian books in print today. This book took my faith to the next level, and reinforced it with clear undeniable FACTS. It's a tough read, as the format isn't for relaxing bedtime reading, but you won't regret time spent studying this fantastic book.
Great Resource May 2, 2008 Subrosa7 (Seattle, WA USA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is an incredible tool for anyone studying the Bible, defending the Bible, or just wants a solid resource in this skeptical 21st century. I have found it profoundly informative and a must for anyone who wanted a more in-depth view of the Bible, History and profound truths therein.
